We want to surf the break right next to the historic Star Fort in Matara. Since it is a bustling local town and not a tourist beach, is it culturally insensitive to walk around the fort area carrying surfboards in just our swimwear.

Yes, Matara is a conservative, working Sri Lankan city, very different from Mirissa or Weligama. Walking around the Star Fort or the main town streets in just a bikini or boardshorts is highly frowned upon. Always put on a t-shirt and a sarong or shorts when you step off the sand and into the town.

I got yelled at by an older woman in Matara for wearing a bikini top to buy water at a local shop. Definitely cover up.

The wave there is great, but changing out of your wetsuit discreetly is key. Bring a large towel poncho.
