At all major Buddhist temples like the Temple of the Tooth or Dambulla, you are strictly required to leave your shoes at a designated counter before entering the sacred grounds. The people manning these counters expect a tiny tip for watching your footwear safely. A standard, fully acceptable amount is 50 to 100 Sri Lankan Rupees per pair of shoes. It is very cheap and ensures your shoes are exactly where you left them when you return.
