Tuk tuk mafia in Ella, is it safe to use PickMe.
3 Answers from travellers
The local tuk tuk mafia in Ella is unfortunately very aggressive. They actively block ride hailing apps like PickMe and Uber from operating within the town limits to protect their heavily inflated tourist prices.
To get around safely without paying exorbitant street prices, ask your guesthouse owner to call a trusted local driver for you. They usually have established relationships and can secure a fair, pre negotiated local rate on your behalf.
If a PickMe driver accepts your ride, local drivers might physically stop the vehicle and force you to get out. It is generally not safe or worth the intense hassle to try and use the apps directly in the main Ella town area.

People outside stations offer to "help" buy tickets but charge large markups. They may buy cheap third-class tickets and sell as more expensive classes.
