After drinking in Kandy, our tuktuk driver offered to take us to a secret viewpoint before our hotel. He drove us to a dark hill and demanded 5000 rupees to take us back.

This is extortion. Drunk tourists are heavily targeted by rogue drivers late at night in Kandy. Always use PickMe so the route is tracked, and never agree to unplanned detours at 2 AM.

That is terrifying. Did you pay him or call the police.

Never get into an unmetered tuktuk off the street at night. Only use apps.

Take a photo of the license plate before getting in. If they see you do that, they will not try to scam you.

If you are at a bar, ask the bouncer to call a trusted local driver for you. They usually know the safe ones.

The same thing happened to me in Colombo. They prey on the fact that you have been drinking.

We just paid him because we were in the middle of nowhere and scared. Lesson learned.
