I want to travel like locals on buses. Is it feasible for longer routes like Colombo to Galle or Kandy?

Yes, very feasible and cheap. For Colombo-Galle, the highway buses from Maharagama or Makumbura are fast and comfortable (AC). For hill country routes, normal buses are slower but scenic. Learn basic Sinhala numbers for seats, have small change ready, and be prepared for crowded conditions at peak times. Women often get priority seating in some buses. It's a great cultural experience if you're patient.

The expressway buses to Galle, Matara, and Kandy are excellent value. For other routes, Google Maps or 12Go can help with schedules. Pack light - space is limited.

Highway buses sound good. Will try Colombo to Galle that way.
