We desperately want to see the famous Yala leopards. Should we book the early morning safari or the afternoon one for the highest chance of sighting these elusive big cats.

The early morning safari starting at five thirty is hands down the best time for leopard sightings in Yala. Leopards are most active during the cool dawn hours when they hunt and move between territories. By eight in the morning they usually retreat into the shade. Book the morning slot at least two weeks in advance during peak season.

Wear neutral colored clothing in browns and greens. Bright colors and white can spook the wildlife. Bring a wide brimmed hat, strong sunscreen, and plenty of drinking water. The open jeeps offer no shade and the midday sun can be brutally intense even in winter months.

February through July is generally the best season for safaris because water levels drop and animals gather around the remaining waterholes. Avoid September as Yala block one usually closes for annual maintenance during that month. Always confirm the park is open before booking your accommodation.
