The Great Gathering typically occurs during the dry season from July to October. As the water levels in the Minneriya tank recede, the lush grass on the bed attracts up to three hundred elephants at a time. It is considered one of the most incredible wildlife spectacles in the world. Outside these months, the elephants disperse into the surrounding forests of Kaudulla and Eco Park.

If you visit in May or June, you might see fewer elephants but the park is much greener. Always check with local safari jeep drivers a day before as they monitor which park has the most active herds on that specific day.
