If we are driving a rental car and an elephant is on the road, what is the protocol.

You must immediately stop your vehicle at a very safe, substantial distance. Do not inch forward trying to get a better photograph, as this will highly agitate the animal.

Keep your engine running, roll up your windows, and simply wait peacefully until the elephant decides to cross the road and disappear into the jungle. Patience is your absolute best defense.

Absolutely never honk your horn, flash your high beam headlights, or rev your engine. These loud noises will deeply stress the elephant and might provoke a highly dangerous charge towards your car.
