When is the best time to spot sloth bears in Wilpattu National Park?

Wilpattu is genuinely the absolute best park in Sri Lanka for spotting elusive sloth bears. The peak sighting season runs from June through September which coincides with the palu fruit season. The bears climb the palu trees to feast on the sweet ripe fruits making them much easier to spot during morning and afternoon safari drives. Outside this fruiting season bear sightings become significantly rarer.
Always remain completely silent and still during a bear encounter as sudden movements or loud voices can startle them. Sloth bears are generally shy of humans but can become aggressive if they feel threatened. Never attempt to leave your jeep under any circumstances and follow your guide instructions strictly throughout the entire encounter.
Book a full day safari rather than a half day to maximize your bear spotting chances. Sloth bears are most active during the cooler early morning hours and again in the late afternoon. A skilled experienced jeep driver who knows the favorite palu trees and bear movement patterns dramatically increases your odds of a sighting.
