Everyone chases leopards but I am fascinated by the SLOTH BEAR the shaggy elusive one I gather they are hard to see Which park gives the best chance Wilpattu seems to come up is there a special season (something about a fruit) how do you maximise the odds with a tracking guide and is June any good or should I temper expectations I would treasure even a glimpse of this strange beautiful animal Bear trackers and lucky travellers please advise

Wilpattu naturalist and bear tracker so the honest sloth bear picture temper expectations and treasure the glimpse exactly the right mindset The best park WILPATTU is the prime sloth bear destination its forest and villu landscape (the Wilpattu threads) holds a good sloth bear population and is the place serious bear seekers go Yala has them too (especially the blocks) but Wilpattu is the bear park of choice they are present but ELUSIVE everywhere shy solitary and well camouflaged so even here a sighting is luck not a given THE season the fruit you half remember this is the key the PALU fruit (and weera) the wild fruits ripen around the dry middle of the year (roughly June to August or September depending on the year) and the sloth bears come out to GORGE on the fallen palu fruit this is the single best window to see them they are more active visible and findable when feasting on the ripe fruit so your timing instinct is good ask the park and guides about the current fruiting Maximising the odds a GOOD tracking guide and driver above all (the safari threads) one who knows the fruiting trees the bear signs and where they have been seen go in the FRUIT season do FULL days or multiple drives (more time more chance) be PATIENT and quiet wait at productive fruiting areas early and late and accept that you are looking for a shy animal not a guaranteed one multiple game drives over a couple of days hugely beats a single hopeful one June good news June is within the run up to and start of the palu season AND it is the dry zone so Wilpattu is accessible and the bears are beginning to feast so JUNE is genuinely a GOOD time for a bear attempt the odds rise as the fruit peaks through the following months so early in the season be a touch more patient Temper and treasure even in the best park and season the sloth bear is a lucky sighting so go for the whole Wilpattu experience (the leopards the villus the birds the solitude) with the bear as the treasured maybe not the guaranteed tick and if a shaggy black shape ambles out of the scrub to a fruiting tree you will never forget it The plan Wilpattu in the palu fruit season (June onward) a top tracking guide full or multiple days patience at the fruiting areas and the right mindset gives you the best real chance at the elusive sloth bear

Saw a sloth bear at a palu tree in Wilpattu in the fruit season and the guide had taken us straight to a fruiting area on exactly this logic the right park right season right guide stacked the odds and it paid off

Following up booking Wilpattu with a named bear tracking guide for multiple drives the multiple days over a single hopeful drive point is the bit I would have underdone for such an elusive animal

The pair it with the quieter Wilpattu over busy Yala point also means fewer jeeps spoiling a shy bear sighting the Wilpattu vs Yala threads the solitude of Wilpattu suits bear watching not just the higher bear odds

The treasure the glimpse mindset is so right we did not see a bear on our first trip and the leopards villus and birds made it wonderful anyway then a bear on the second visit was pure joy go for the whole park not just the bear
