We are absolute beginners looking to learn to surf Is Hiriketiya or Ahangama a better beach for beginner surfing and avoiding stray dogs

For absolute beginners, Hiriketiya is visually less intimidating because it is a sheltered horseshoe bay. The inside section is pure sand and soft rolling whitewash, perfect for learning. However, it gets extremely crowded. Ahangama has more intermediate reef breaks, but nearby Weligama is actually the absolute best for beginners due to the massive sandy bay.

Go to Weligama to learn, then move to Hiriketiya once you can stand up consistently.

As for stray dogs, they are on every beach in Sri Lanka. They are mostly harmless during the day and just sleep in the shade of the surf racks.
