We only have one full day for a safari. Which park gives the best chance of seeing a leopard? Yala is famous but very crowded. Is Udawalawe a better bet for big cats?

Yala Block 1 still has the highest leopard density in Sri Lanka, but the jeeps can be bumper-to-bumper in peak season. Udawalawe is excellent for elephants and has decent leopard sightings with far fewer crowds. If your priority is leopard, do Yala early morning (6am entry) and ask your driver to focus on the less popular tracks.

Thank you! We will go with Yala and request an early slot with a good driver.

Book the 6:00 AM slot and tell the driver you want leopard-focused route. They talk to each other on the radio about recent sightings.

We did Yala last week and saw two leopards! One was a mother with cubs near the rock outcrop. The key is having an experienced driver who knows the recent sightings. Udawalawe is more relaxed but we only saw elephants there.
