We kept the south for the grandparents and the toddler because we already dumped the surf idea. Warning said 2.5-3 m swells Puttalam to Pottuvil via Galle and a surge Beruwala to Matara, valid until 5.30pm on the 20th. That expired last night. Is the sea actually usable tomorrow or does the water stay ugly for days.

The advisory is off the clock, the sea does not get the memo at 5:31. August on this coast is still onshore and dump-y. Unawatuna bay is the least-stupid toddler paddle on a calm morning, not a swim-beyond-the-flags. Mirissa beach in August is for walking. If the water is brown and loud, you do not negotiate with it. Wait and look at 7am, not at a WhatsApp from Wednesday.

We stood in to the knees at Unawatuna, no flags of joy, no tragedy. Grandad sat under a cafe that is still standing (not every beach cafe is - Ahangama had demolitions).

Wave heights in that advisory were for sea areas, not a tsunami on the Galle Face. Near-shore surge Beruwala-Matara was the bit that matters for a beach day.

Restaurants without visible prices. Bill arrives with inflated charges (500 LKR coconut becomes 1500 LKR). "Service charges" added without disclosure.
