Are the Ralph Lauren/Nike clothes in Nuwara Eliya/Colombo real? They are so cheap!
I visited a "Factory Outlet" shop in Nuwara Eliya (and one in Colombo called "House of Fashions"). I found Polo shirts and North Face jackets for like $10 USD.
The labels say "Made in Sri Lanka." Are these genuine factory rejects/surplus, or just good fakes?

Sri Lanka is a major garment manufacturing hub for these brands, so the answer is: It's a mix.
The "Real" Surplus: Shops like House of Fashions, ODEL, or Cool Planet often stock genuine "overruns" (items with tiny defects, like a crooked stitch) from the official factories. These are 100% authentic fabric and quality, just "rejected" by the brand's QC.
The Fakes: Small roadside shops in Nuwara Eliya selling "North Face" winter jackets for $15 are usually selling fakes or unauthorized copies made with cheaper local fabric.
The "Cut Label": If you see a branded shirt with the neck label cut or marked with a black pen, it is likely a genuine factory reject. The factory cuts the tag to prevent resale as "Grade A" stock. These are the best value!
Sri Lanka does manufacture for big brands, so “Made in Sri Lanka” can be true. But $10 for Ralph Lauren, Nike, or The North Face is usually not official retail. Most of these “factory outlets” are either surplus, seconds, or copies. You can find decent quality, but don’t assume it’s genuine.
If it’s a North Face jacket for $10, it’s almost certainly not legit.
Even if it’s made in Sri Lanka, the brand controls distribution. Genuine surplus does exist sometimes, but most shops are selling replicas or unlicensed over-runs.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
