I read in an old guidebook that you can book train tickets by calling 365 on a Mobitel SIM. Does this still work for tourists?

M-Ticketing used to be the main way, but recently the government launched a dedicated online portal (seatreservation.railway.gov.lk). The website is much easier for foreigners as you can pay directly with international credit cards.

Got it, the old guidebook is outdated. I will use the government website. Thanks!

If you use M-Ticketing, you need a local Mobitel or Dialog SIM, and they deduct the ticket cost directly from your phone credit balance! It is a hassle to load that much phone credit.

You also have to go to a railway station or a Mobitel branch to print the physical ticket after booking on the phone. The new website just gives you an e-ticket with a QR code.
