The best strategy is to climb Pidurangala very early for the sunrise, come down for a heavy breakfast, and then climb Sigiriya in the late afternoon when the crowds thin out.

Make sure you drink liters of water. Climbing thousands of stairs twice in one day in the tropical heat is exhausting, so pacing yourself is critical.
