Yes, you can absolutely bypass central Colombo. There are direct AC mini buses and larger intercity buses that depart from the main bus terminal located just outside the Bandaranaike International Airport gates.

These buses head straight to Kandy via the scenic Kadawatha route. The journey takes roughly three to four hours. It is significantly faster and much less stressful than taking a taxi into chaotic Colombo just to catch the train.
