Transfer Kandy-west, kids want elephants that are not a jeep. Every ethical blog says skip Pinnawala. Millennium Elephant Foundation is 10 km the other side of Kegalle and looks calmer. We are not riding anything. Is Pinnawala still the river-bath circus.

If you want captive elephants at all, MEF is the one responsible operators point at - small, sanctuary-framed, no riding. Pinnawala is a large, old, tourist-funded orphanage: river bath is scheduled around visitors, adult males are chained in musth, breeding is part of the model. That is not a secret. Kids will still see elephants there. Whether you want to pay for that model is the question.
We did MEF, helped with a feed, no circus. More expensive feeling, smaller herd. Kids were fine.
Do not add both. And do not buy the roadside "elephant encounter" 2 km from either gate.
Scam Watch: kandy
TukTuk or tour drivers take you to "gem museums" or "government-certified" gem shops. They receive huge commissions (up to 40%) on anything you buy. Prices are inflated 3-10x the actual value.
Men approach tourists near Temple of the Tooth offering to be guides. After the tour, they demand large "donations" or guide fees (5000-10000 LKR).
