No, you do not need a guide to hike Pidurangala rock. The trail is very obvious and starts right behind the white temple at the base of the rock.

Just make sure you bring a good flashlight. The final section requires scrambling over some large boulders where a headlamp is very useful.

Even if you hike in the dark before sunrise, there are always other tourists making the climb at the same time, so you can easily follow the crowd.
