To explore the pristine hidden mangroves you need to avoid the main kite surfing lagoon entirely. Contact the Kalpitiya Eco Tourism society or specialized lodges like Guava Resort. They offer incredibly quiet guided kayak tours deep into the Wilpattu border mangroves.
The guides will take you through narrow twisting tunnels formed entirely by mangrove roots. It is completely silent and you have a very high chance of spotting rare Kingfishers and massive water monitors.
Do not attempt to kayak into the deep mangroves alone without a guide. The channels are like a massive maze and it is incredibly easy to get completely lost and disoriented once the sun starts setting.
