I enjoy calm water paddling. Are there good spots for renting kayaks or SUPs in lagoons or calm bays?

Yes, there are options in Negombo lagoon, Bentota river/lagoon area, and some spots near Galle and Unawatuna. You can paddle through mangroves and see birds and village life from the water. It's very peaceful compared to the ocean. Rentals are available through some guesthouses and small operators. Best early morning before wind picks up. Always wear a life jacket and go with someone who knows the area if you're not experienced with currents or tides.

We did a short kayak trip in the Bentota lagoon. Saw lots of birds and it was very calm. Good change from beach time.
