Host just WhatsApped an extra for festival night after we already paid Booking
We paid Booking.com in July for tonight. Host just pinged: festival night, extra cash, "everyone is charging." No number I will type. Is this a real Kandy August thing or the 9.32 surge talking. We are in the room. He has the gate.

If Booking.com was the contract, that is the price. "Festival night" is not a gazette you have to pay in cash at 9.32. Screenshot the chat. Say no once, politely. If the gate becomes a hostage situation, Tourist Police / 081 22 33 333 - DIG's own briefing this week was extra Tourist Police after last year's fake-guide seat hustle. A room extra is the same family of hustle.
Happened to us in Ella, not Kandy. We said the listing was the listing. He stopped. Do not hand over a number you "will not type."
Do not invent a "normal" extra. There isn't an official Perahera room tax for foreigners on a Booking stay. Pay what the app already charged. Review in the morning when you can move.

TukTuk or tour drivers take you to "gem museums" or "government-certified" gem shops. They receive huge commissions (up to 40%) on anything you buy. Prices are inflated 3-10x the actual value.
Men approach tourists near Temple of the Tooth offering to be guides. After the tour, they demand large "donations" or guide fees (5000-10000 LKR).
