How bad is the Ella to Kandy train route after the recent cyclone.
2 Answers from travellers
Unfortunately the severe recent Cyclone Ditwah caused massive devastating landslides and completely washed away major sections of the hill country tracks. The direct train from Kandy to Ella is currently heavily disrupted while engineers rapidly rebuild the historic railway lines.
The government is working incredibly fast to actively restore the tracks. Currently some specific sections are miraculously running but you will highly likely need to take a dedicated replacement bus service around the heavily damaged highland areas to complete your journey.

TukTuk or tour drivers take you to "gem museums" or "government-certified" gem shops. They receive huge commissions (up to 40%) on anything you buy. Prices are inflated 3-10x the actual value.
Men approach tourists near Temple of the Tooth offering to be guides. After the tour, they demand large "donations" or guide fees (5000-10000 LKR).
