The physical climb to the absolute summit of Sigiriya usually takes a reasonably fit adult about forty five minutes to an hour. The entire pathway consists of roughly 1200 very steep stone and metal stairs.
However you should allocate at least three full hours for the entire visit. You will want plenty of time to slowly walk through the sprawling water gardens at the base admire the ancient mirror wall and photograph the brilliant cave frescoes on the way up.
During local public holidays the incredibly narrow metal stairs near the lion paws become massively bottlenecked with thousands of pilgrims. The line can easily completely stall meaning the climb could drastically take over two hours.
