The main road through Pottuvil gets so congested. Are there inland dirt tracks we can take our rental tuk-tuk on to get from our Arugam Bay homestay to Whisky Point faster.

Yes, there is a very scenic dirt shortcut that cuts through Urani village and runs along the edge of the lagoon, completely bypassing the busy Pottuvil town center. It drops you right near the road to Whisky Point. However, it is strictly a dry-season track. If it has rained heavily, do not attempt it; the mud is deep and thick, and a rental tuk-tuk will sink to the axles instantly.

That lagoon shortcut is beautiful at sunrise. Just drive slowly because there are massive herds of water buffalo that sleep right on the dirt track.

Make sure your surfboards are strapped down extremely tight if you take that route. The potholes on the dirt section are vicious and will bounce your boards right off the roof rack.
