We are traveling in July. I know the East Coast is best for weather, but Arugam Bay seems purely for surfers. Is there anything else to do?

Yes! I don't surf. You can take a lagoon safari in Pottuvil to see crocodiles and elephants, visit the ancient Muhudu Maha Viharaya temple, or just enjoy the amazing cafe culture and yoga scene.

Lagoon safaris and Kumana sound fantastic. We will definitely keep it on the itinerary.

Kumana National Park is just 45 minutes south of Arugam Bay. It is phenomenal for bird watching and leopard spotting, and has a fraction of the crowds that Yala gets.

You can also rent a scooter and drive down to Panama beach or Peanut Farm beach. Even if you don't surf, sitting on the sand and watching the pros ride the waves at sunset is incredibly relaxing.
