I am traveling alone in 2026. Are the local buses and hostels safe for women.

Sri Lanka is universally considered a highly safe wonderfully welcoming destination for solo female travelers. Violent crime against tourists is incredibly rare. The major backpacker hubs like Ella and Unawatuna are completely filled with other solo travelers making it very easy to make friends.

However standard global precautions strictly apply. You should absolutely dress conservatively specifically covering your shoulders and knees when taking crowded public buses or visiting temples to avoid unwanted staring. Also always use highly traceable apps like PickMe for late night rides instead of walking completely alone on dark roads.
