Is the Dehiwala Zoo worth visiting during a short trip to Colombo.

For standard international tourists expecting massive modern open enclosures Dehiwala Zoo can be incredibly deeply disappointing. Many of the older cages are heavily criticized by conservationists for being far too small for massive predators like lions and bears.
While local families love taking their children there on weekends foreign visitors generally profoundly prefer spending their incredibly limited time exclusively visiting the completely open wild national parks where animals roam entirely freely.

Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
