I keep seeing the Pekoe Trail through the tea country trending everywhere Are the stages open after the cyclone and is it safe and legal to hike individual stages on my own without hiring a guide

Most of the Pekoe Trail stages around Haputale, Ella, Nuwara Eliya and Kandy are open and signposted, though a couple of stages near the worst landslide zones had short re-routes after Ditwah, so check the current stage status before you go. You can legally walk many stages solo using the GPS maps, and plenty of people do. That said, a local guide is worth it for the trickier estate-path stages where signage fades and you cross private tea land. The free map app for the trail is genuinely good.

Start early. Afternoon mist and rain roll in fast at altitude and the photos go grey. Also carry water, there are long stretches with no shops.

The stage from Ella area towards Demodara is a gentle, beautiful intro with tea fields and the famous loop. Good first solo stage.

Perfect, I will solo the easy stages and grab a guide for the estate ones. Tusen takk!
