Watersports guide so the flatwater paddling picture Where the spots are the MANGROVE lagoons and estuaries are the gems the southwest has the famous river and mangrove systems (the Madu estuary area and the Bentota river the Maduganga the Koggala lake) where you paddle quiet channels under mangrove tunnels past little islands and birdlife the EAST has the big lagoons (the Batticaloa lagoon and others) calm and vast and there are hill country reservoirs and tanks for serene paddling the dry zone tanks too Rent or tour only BOTH some operators in the paddling hubs (the southwest river towns the lagoon towns) rent kayaks and increasingly SUP boards by the hour for the independent paddler and many run guided mangrove paddles which are lovely for the wildlife and the channels you do not know if you want to wander alone rent if you want the wildlife knowledge take the guided paddle Wildlife from the water wonderful and the calm approach is the magic water monitors kingfishers herons egrets cormorants the occasional crocodile (keep a respectful distance) and the mangrove ecosystem up close the silent paddle sees what the noisy boat misses June and the monsoon the SHELTERED inland water is far more paddleable than the open sea in monsoon BUT the southwest is the wet region in June so the southwest rivers get rain and runoff the EAST lagoons are in the dry season now and are the better June bet calm and dry follow the dry coast logic the whole island uses paddle the east in June save the southwest mangroves for the dry season so for June head to the east coast lagoons rent or take a guided paddle go early for the calm water and wildlife and enjoy the quiet that only a paddle gives
East coast lagoons for June rent or guided and go early for the calm and wildlife this is the quiet water I wanted the silent paddle sees what the noisy boat misses is exactly why I paddle thank you
The guided mangrove paddle was a highlight gliding through the mangrove tunnels in silence with a guide naming the birds beats the motorboat tour that churns through the same channels go quiet and slow
