Most reputable surf hostels provide lockers, but you MUST bring your own sturdy padlock. Do not rely on cheap combination locks. Theft is usually opportunistic—committed by other travelers, not locals. Never leave your phone charging on your bed while you are out. If a place feels sketchy and has no lockers, give your passport to the front desk to keep in their safe.

Dry bags are also great for taking your phone/cash into the water with you when you surf.

I had cash stolen from my bag while I was in the shower. Keep it locked up at all times.

Also, do not take all your cash and cards to the beach parties. Leave them locked up.
