If we stay at the beach bars in Hiriketiya until 2 AM, is it safe to walk back up the steep hills to our homestay in the dark.

Muggings are extremely rare, but the walk is not recommended for two reasons: Stray dogs and lack of lighting. The local beach dogs that are friendly during the day form aggressive, territorial packs at night. Secondly, the roads are steep, potholed, and pitch black. Just pay a tuk-tuk driver 500 rupees waiting outside the bar to drive you safely to your door.

Also, snakes are active on the warm asphalt at night. Bring a flashlight if you must walk.

I twisted my ankle walking back up that hill in the dark. Definitely take a tuk-tuk.
