Walking back alone to your hostel after beach raves at night
7 Answers from travellers
Do NOT walk up those dark jungle hills alone at 2 AM. While violent crime against tourists is rare, the main danger is packs of highly territorial stray dogs that become aggressive at night. Furthermore, the lack of street lighting makes it very easy to twist an ankle on the potholed roads. There are always tuk-tuks waiting outside Dots. Pay 500 rupees for a safe ride.
If you must walk, join a group of other backpackers heading the same way. Dogs avoid large groups.
Also, snakes are active on the warm asphalt at night. Use a tuk-tuk.
Or ask your hostel owner to send their regular driver to pick you up.
They will ask for 1500, just negotiate down to 800. It is worth it for your safety.
