Madu River boat from Balapitiya in August rain - mangrove tour or a wet hour of cinnamon-island shops
Gap in the south itinerary Sunday. Boat guys at the bridge quoting a "two-hour safari, fish massage, temple island". Forecast is showers. Is the river actually nice in the monsoon or just a floating gift shop.

The mangrove labyrinth is real and pretty in the rain - quieter, greener. What ruins it is the standard circuit: fish-spa stop, a "cinnamon island" that is a stall, a temple with a donation box. Book a boat that says no shops, or say it at the jetty and watch them sulk. Lifejacket on. Afternoon showers are normal; they rarely cancel for drizzle.
We did 90 minutes, skipped the fish tanks, still got sold cinnamon. River was the point. Kingfishers, a monitor, a lot of plastic on the banks.
