Nallur flag went up Monday - is the Jaffna festival actually happening this week or did we miss the chariot

Sitting in Trinco, thinking of a two-day hop north. Instagram from Nallur looks crowded already. A 2019 blog said the chariot is the only day worth it and that is September. Did they already hoist. Can a tourist even go inside during the 25 days or is it devotees only. We are not Hindu, we do not want to be the loud ones in shorts.

The flag went up Monday 17th. The town is in festival mode every evening now - processions, food, loudspeakers - through mid-September. The chariot (Ther) is the big public day in early September, not tonight. You can be around the kovil respectfully any of these nights. Cover shoulders and knees, no leather shoes or belt at the inner areas, no photos where they tell you no. Non-Hindus are guests, not the audience of a concert.

We walked the outer courtyard Tuesday night. Heavy, beautiful, packed. We did not push into the inner sanctum. Eat at the vegetarian stalls, leave a small donation, do not treat it like Perahera seating.

If you only have one Jaffna night this week, go. If you can come back for the chariot in September, that is the postcard. Do not expect a reserved grandstand.

We are Hindu-adjacent enough to sit at the back and eat. Just did not want to walk into the sanctum in hiking shorts.
