10 days total. Driver seems expensive but convenient. Train cheaper but more hassle? What do most do?

For first time, driver is worth it for the Kandy to south leg. Less stress with luggage and you can stop if you want. Train is beautiful but the changes and stations can be tiring if you're new. Many first timers do driver one way, train or bus other way to save. Depends on budget really.
I did train both ways, was okay but driver would have been nicer with my big bag. Your call.
Yeah driver makes it easy. If money is tight, train is fine, just plan the day around it. Both popular.

TukTuk or tour drivers take you to "gem museums" or "government-certified" gem shops. They receive huge commissions (up to 40%) on anything you buy. Prices are inflated 3-10x the actual value.
Men approach tourists near Temple of the Tooth offering to be guides. After the tour, they demand large "donations" or guide fees (5000-10000 LKR).
