Palmyra toddy is a huge part of Jaffna heritage. It is safe and even considered healthy if drank fresh early in the morning before it ferments heavily. However, the local taverns (Kallu Thaavaram) are very rustic, male-dominated spaces. Go with a local guide if possible, and try the spicy crab curries they sell outside the taverns.

Make sure to go before 10 AM. After noon, it gets very sour and highly alcoholic in the sun.

We went to one near Point Pedro. It was intense but the locals were super friendly once they realized we just wanted to try the drink.

Technically yes, but culturally it is very rare. Women in your group might feel uncomfortable due to the staring.
