The most important "gear" you need is the knowledge NOT to do this. There are no safe, official trails to the upper pools of Ravana Falls. The rocks are coated in black algae that is slicker than ice, and flash floods can surge over the edge without any warning. It is incredibly dangerous and tourists have died there. Stick to the designated paths at Kithal Ella or Little Adams Peak instead.

If you hike ANY jungle trail in Ella, you need leech socks and insect repellent. The leeches are everywhere.

Proper hiking boots with deep treads. Do not attempt Ella trails in flip flops or smooth running shoes.
