South swell dying or are we just looking at the wrong webcam - Hiriketiya vs A-Bay this week

Two of us are intermediate. Booked 5 nights Hiriketiya from tomorrow because a blog said August still works if you get the right cove. Instagram from A-Bay looks glassy and packed. Our surf camp just WhatsApp'd onshore, rain, maybe a peak at 6am. Did we pick the dead coast.

Mid-August on the south is off-season. Hiriketiya's horseshoe can still hold a small, dumpy wave on a clean dawn, Ahangama / Midigama reefs are mostly blown out or stormy. If surfing is the point of the week, you are on the wrong side of the island. A-Bay is peak - crowded, cash-only, ATMs empty, but the point is the reason people come in August.

We got two short dawn sessions and a lot of yoga and rain. Not nothing. If you already paid for the room, keep 2 nights, then jump east via Ella or a van. Do not add Weligama hoping it is more sheltered - same monsoon.

Main Point is busy from 6. If you come mid-week you will still get waves. Bring cash. Do not arrive Friday night expecting a board and a lesson booked on Instagram.
