This is an incredibly frustrating highly prevalent scam. Shady tiny rental shops will intentionally rent you a massively worn previously damaged board and aggressively falsely claim you caused the tiny scratches demanding entirely extortionate repair fees. The absolute perfect defense is extreme prevention. Before you ever physically touch the board rigorously clearly photograph every single tiny existing ding and scratch from multiple specific angles while the shop owner watches you. If they still aggressively demand money later confidently clearly show them the time stamped photographic evidence. If they continue to threaten you simply firmly state you will instantly call the Tourist Police and they will almost universally immediately drop the fake charges.
