I am coming on a 6 month extended tourist visa. Can I bring 4 surfboards through Bandaranaike Airport without paying heavy commercial import taxes.

Bringing 4 surfboards is usually flagged by customs as commercial import rather than personal sporting equipment, even on a 6 month visa. They may charge you an import duty of around 15 to 20 percent of the assessed value of the boards. To avoid this, pack a maximum of 2 boards in a single coffin bag.

Honestly, I brought 3 boards last year. They just put them through the oversized scanner and waved me through. It highly depends on the customs officer on duty.

Also check your airline policy! SriLankan Airlines offers free surfboard carriage up to a certain weight, but Qatar and Emirates charge hefty oversize fees.

Save yourself the headache and airline fees. Bring your two favorites and buy a custom board from the local shapers in Weligama when you arrive.

If you do get stopped, explain that they are your personal used boards for different wave sizes. Do not bring them in original plastic wrapping or with price tags still on, or they will definitely tax you.
