Visa extension I want to stay longer than my ETA allows how do I extend my stay
I came on the standard tourist ETA but I am falling in love with the place and want to stay longer than it allows How do I extend my tourist visa is it possible and straightforward do I go to an immigration office in Colombo or do it online how long can I extend to what does it cost and how far before expiry should I start I would rather extend properly than overstay and risk a fine at the airport Anyone who has extended their stay or knows the process please advise

Travel agent so the extension picture and please verify the current rules and fees with the Department of Immigration directly as they change Is it possible YES extending the tourist visa is a normal well trodden process plenty of travellers do it the initial ETA gives you a short tourist stay and you can apply to EXTEND it to a longer total period in stages the first extension typically takes you to a few months and further extension is possible up to a longer maximum for tourists How you do it historically you went in person to the Department of Immigration and Emigration head office in Colombo (Battaramulla) with your passport photos a form the fee and an onward or return ticket and proof of funds increasingly there is an ONLINE extension process too so check the current immigration website first it may save the trip many people still find the in person office the reliable route for the longer extension start there How long the extension takes you to a longer total stay in tiers (a first extension then potentially further) the exact periods and the maximum total tourist stay are set by immigration confirm the current limits for your nationality Cost there is a fee that varies by nationality and the length of extension (it is tiered and not trivial budget for it) check the current fee schedule How far ahead apply BEFORE your current visa expires do not leave it to the last day go a week or so before expiry to allow for queues and any hiccups do not overstay Overstay consequences if you overstay you face a fine at departure (calculated on the overstay) and hassle at the airport so extending properly is cheaper and far less stressful than overstaying The process start at the immigration website to check for online extension and current rules and fees if in person go to the Colombo immigration office a week before expiry with passport photos funds proof onward ticket and the fee extend in good time and never overstay then enjoy the extra weeks guilt free
Extended mine for a longer slow stay the Colombo office took a morning of queuing but was straightforward bring everything listed and photocopies and go early the online option was not fully smooth for my case so the office was the sure route
Extend in tiers apply a week before expiry at the Colombo immigration office or online with passport photos funds and the fee and never overstay this is exactly the do it properly answer I wanted checking the immigration site first thank you
The check the current rules and fees yourself caveat is important these things change so treat any forum answer including this thread as a starting point and confirm with the official immigration department for your nationality and dates
