If you rent from a highly reputable agency like Tuk Tuk Rental, they take full responsibility. If the engine completely fails or you suffer a major mechanical breakdown, they will dispatch a replacement vehicle or cover the total repair costs at a local garage. However, if you rent informally from a random street vendor, the contract is usually non existent. The vendor will often refuse to pay and might even aggressively demand that you cover the repair costs out of pocket, blaming your driving. Always choose a professional agency to protect yourself.
