The wait time for a Visa on Arrival fluctuates massively depending on how many international flights land simultaneously. If you arrive behind two massive A380 jets from Europe you could be stuck standing in line for well over an hour before even reaching passport control.
If you land during a quiet period it might only take twenty minutes. However applying for the ETA online beforehand is infinitely superior. It completely allows you to bypass the visa payment desk entirely and walk straight to immigration saving you intense frustration after a long flight.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
