The Western Monasteries, also known as Tapovana, are a brilliant, completely uncrowded hidden gem in Anuradhapura. These ancient forest ruins were built specifically for ascetic, meditating monks who rejected all luxury. Therefore, the architecture is incredibly minimalist and devoid of ornate carvings, featuring striking, stark stone bridges and meditation platforms surrounded by thick jungle. They are perfectly safe to explore by bicycle, and because they are located slightly outside the main archaeological park boundaries, they are exceptionally peaceful and totally free of massive pilgrim crowds.
