I will be in Sri Lanka for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. What specific treats should I look for at local festivals and what are they made of.

You must try Kavum, which is a deep fried oil cake made from rice flour and treacle, often called the king of New Year sweets. Another favorite is Kokis, a crispy flower shaped biscuit made from coconut milk and rice flour. For something crunchy, look for Mun Kavum made with green gram. Most families will offer you a platter with these treats along with milk rice called Kiribath, which is the first meal of the New Year.

The Aluth Avurudda atmosphere is incredible. If you are invited to a local home, it is polite to try a bit of everything. The sweet smell of frying sweets fills the villages during this time.
