The coral reefs off the coast of Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa are an absolute haven for sea turtles. The Hikkaduwa marine sanctuary specifically is swarming with massive friendly green turtles that graze peacefully on the shallow reefs.
If you dive the shallower beginner friendly wrecks near Galle you will very frequently spot Hawksbill turtles sleeping quietly under the rusting metal plates of the old ships.
For a truly unique experience travel to Pigeon Island National Park in Trincomalee on the east coast during the summer. The protected shallow reefs there guarantee incredible intimate encounters with both turtles and harmless blacktip reef sharks.
