Are those free Sri Lanka visa ads for UK/US/India even real?

Booking last minute for late August. Every Instagram ad says the visa is free now for 40 countries including the UK. Then I land on a .com site charging me USD 79 "processing". Is it actually free? Do I still have to apply? Flying in 6 days and panicking a bit.

Free means the fee, not the form. From 25 May this year about 40 countries get a 30-day tourist ETA at zero charge, double entry inside those 30 days. You still apply before you fly on eta.gov.lk. Maldives, Seychelles, Singapore also go free (Maldives get 90 days). If you paid before 25 May they are not refunding. If your passport is not on that list, old paid ETA still applies. Better you apply first, screenshot the approval notice, not just the acknowledgement.

UK here, applied July on eta.gov.lk, paid nothing, PDF in a few hours. I printed it anyway. If a site wants USD 50-150 "service" and you are on the free list, close the tab.

Three guests in June thought free visa = just show the passport. Airline almost stopped them at the gate. Apply. Take a photo of the approval.

The 40 includes UK, USA, India, Australia, a bunch of EU, Gulf, Japan, Korea. Still a form. Do not pay a middleman for that.
