I am an intermediate surfer heading to Arugam Bay Main Point. I heard the localism is intense. What are the unwritten rules to avoid getting yelled at in the water.

Main Point is a world-class wave, and locals fiercely protect the peak. Do not paddle straight to the top of the point on your first day. Sit on the shoulder, wait your turn, and absolutely NEVER drop in on a local. Respect goes a long way; smile, say hello, and let them have the set waves.

If you are intermediate, try Baby Point just down the beach first. It is much more forgiving and less crowded.
