Arugam Bay surf lessons in March — is it a good time for beginners?
I've never surfed before but I want to try it in Arugam Bay. March is when I'm visiting. I've read that the main surf season is May–October on the east coast, so I'm worried March might not work. Questions: Will there be any surf at all in March? Are there surf schools operating year-round, or do most shut down in the off-season? Is the beach safe for a complete beginner with no experience at all?

East coast local here. The honest answer about Arugam Bay in March:
Surf conditions in March:
- March is the off-season for Arugam Bay's surf. The main break (Main Point) is mostly flat or has small, inconsistent waves 1–2 feet
- This is not ideal for intermediate or experienced surfers, but actually quite good for complete beginners
- Small, gentle waves with a long sandy beach section are exactly what you want for your first lessons
Surf schools in March:
- Most established schools operate year-round, although some scale down in off-season
- Schools that typically stay open: Arugam Bay Surf Club, several guesthouses with resident instructors
- Lesson cost: ~USD 15–25 per 1.5–2 hour session including board and instructor
- Off-season means more one-on-one attention from instructors since it's quieter
Practical notes:
- The beach is safe in March — no strong rip currents on the main beach
- Water temperature: warm (~28°C), no wetsuit needed
- Accommodation in March is cheaper and much easier to find
- Arugam Bay in March is genuinely lovely — fewer tourists, chilled atmosphere

I learned to surf in Arugam Bay in April (similar conditions to March). Small waves, patient instructor from the guesthouse, and I was standing up by day 2. The instructor told me they prefer teaching beginners in the off-season because the water is calmer and they can focus properly. Don't overthink it — just go!
